Eden Albert Community Board delivers another heritage project

Eden Albert Ward Councillor Glenda Fryer today welcomed news of installation of footpath plaques outside historic buildings in Mount Eden Village that tell local passers-by stories and history of the building.

“The project took a long time in gestation, but Council has now got the prototype right. We will now plan to roll out similar historic signage in Kingsland, Eden Valley, Sandringham, and Balmoral village centres. Once a heritage assessment is done of the Mount Albert shops, plaques will be placed there as well”, says Mrs Fryer.

Mrs Fryer warns that “These are the sorts of projects that may well disappear when a super-city takes more of a commercial approach to everything it does. Local community benefits such as these may be lost from the super-city agenda, so it’s a race against time to get these local projects completed.”

She concludes, “Locals like to see and learn about the community’s early beginnings, and its rich sense of place. I felt these plaques was a tangible way of telling the stories of Mount Eden, stories that provide a rich sense of place for the village.”

Council is currently scoping sites where the plaques will be, which will be installed once the sites are approved. It is expected that the plaques will be installed over the next few weeks.
