Manukau youth get rewarded for reading
Manukau Libraries’ annual teen reading challenge Manix3 makes a welcome return next month. This year it has a music inspired theme and prizes.
The challenge rewards youth for reading books of their own choice and points are awarded for every book read. At the end of the programme, these points will be used in a giant prize draw.
Up for grabs are two $400 LG phones, two 8GB iPod Nano players, the complete set of Twilight books, MP3 players, Sony Walkmans, Twilight and Dark Knight DVDs, clothing and more.
The popularity of last year’s “read and pay off your fine scheme” means cash-strapped teens can once again use the points they earn to clear their overdue fines.
The challenge will have an online presence this year on the social networking site Bebo allowing Manix readers to connect with other participants across Manukau.
“Manukau Libraries have heaps of resources for young people. Manix is a great way to encourage them to use them”, says Jody Gayton, Learning and Literacy Co-ordinator for Manukau Libraries.
Manix3 is open to all youth aged 12 to 18 and ends on 17 July. Teens can join Manukau Libraries for six weeks of reading, internet use, free stuff and celebration events by registering online at www.manukau-libraries.govt.nz or at their local library from 8 June.
