Massive Can Collection Supports Food Banks
Massive Can Collection Supports Food Banks
5 June 2009
All over Wellington cans of food are being donated towards the ICan charity event to break the Guinness World Record for a can sculpture.
The goal is 50,000 cans by the 26th of June. The next day they will be made into a huge sculpture in Civic Square and after that they will be distributed to designated food banks.
Wellington schools and businesses have been asked to organise can collections.
The event is organised by Wellington young leaders brought together by the On The Edge Trust. Its founder Ben Irving says, "The aim is to see the positive contribution Wellington youth can make.
He says, “This is an idea from the youth and is being run by young people”.
Encouraged by the idea, Downtown Community Ministry Director Stephanie McIntyre says, “Food banks are stretched for food right now with demand continuing to increase and while we aren’t one of the food banks benefiting from the event, we hope it’s a great success”.
