Providing a Pathway for Growth

Moving to part-time paid employment seemed a natural step for long-term volunteer, and service user, Te Amo Roberts.

For a long-time he’s supported Downtown Community Ministry by helping out in the food bank and the annual book fair.

This year he officially joined the DCM staff and took on a food bank support role where he restocks supplies and also carries out general cleaning duties.

A hard worker who enjoys contributing Te Amo loves being part of a team.

Community Project Worker David Manuel says, “He arrives early and gets stuck into it. We love his positive can-do attitude. It’s not too hard to see the love he has for the place. It’s really like a second home for him.”

Book fair volunteers are particularly thankful for Te Amo’s help. They recently acknowledged their appreciation by holding a surprise birthday celebration for him.

DCM advocates have provided support for Te Amo’s tenancy in a Wellington City Council flat and other issues that may arise. He is also a recipient of support through DCM’s banking programme.

Street People Project coordinator Janice Coldicott says, “Te Amo is one of many people DCM has assisted in their pathway to paid work. He has the opportunity here to learn the skills needed in the workplace.”
