‘Water and Us’ environmental programme
‘Water and Us’ environmental programme to be launched tomorrow
ROTORUA 21.09.09: Rotorua District Council’s new ‘Water and Us’ environmental programme is to be launched at a function tomorrow [22 September].
The solid waste reduction and water conservation programme, aimed at Year 5 and 6 students, will be part of council-led school environmental education programmes commencing in 2010.
The district council’s Waste Water Treatment Plant environmental education officer, Monica Quirke, says the ‘Water and Us’ programme is an effective way to distribute environmental messages throughout the community.
“This initiative is very hands on and provides a range of learning activities for children at community water-supply, stormwater and wastewater treatment sites.
“Young people are
our greatest advocates for the environment. These kids will
become more aware of responsible behaviour around water use
and pollution, and we hope they will be motivated to adopt
and pass on to their families what they’ve learnt.”
The ‘Water and Us’ launch for Year 5 and 6 teachers
will take place on Tuesday 22 September at Third Place café
on Lake Road from 3.30 to 5.30pm.
