Search underway for future leaders

ROTORUA 21.09.09: Rotorua District Council (RDC) is on the look out for a group of diverse young people to join the 2010 Rotorua District Youth Council (RDYC).

The group of future leaders, aged between 13 and 18 years, brings together a mix of ethnicity, geographic location, gender and experience, and aims to encourage youth participation in the community.

RDC youth projects officer, Jill Campbell, says youth councillors meet on the first Tuesday of every month to discuss current youth issues, learn a bit about local government and decision making, get involved in the community, and provide Rotorua District Council with a youth perspective.

RDYC also supports and helps organise youth events and participates in local and national initiatives.

“We're looking for young people interested in learning new leadership and life skills, and supporting the positive development of Rotorua's young people. They should have good links in the community, and a proactive and positive attitude,” says Mrs Campbell.

Applicants must also be able to attend the compulsory Youth Council training weekend on 12 – 13 February 2010.

Last day for applications is Friday 30 October, with a selection panel choosing the 2010 Rotorua District Youth Council by 13 November.
