Auckland Mayors invited to attend Dalai Lama Talk

Press Release

11 November 2009

Auckland Mayors invited to attend Dalai Lama Public Talk

The Dalai Lama Visit Trust New Zealand has issued an invitation to Auckland’s Mayors to attend the Dalai Lama’s public talk when His Holiness visits the city early next month.

The Dalai Lama has accepted an invitation to speak on the topic of A Peaceful Mind at the Vector Arena on Saturday, December 5th. A second address on Awakening the Mind will also be given by the Dalai Lama on Sunday, December 6th at the same venue.

Trust spokesperson, Neil Cameron, says the public talk in 2007 notably reflected the diversity of Auckland’s communities. ``We expect a large number of people from communities across Auckland, from all walks of life, regardless of religious and political beliefs, will take this opportunity to hear the His Holiness speak and hope that the Mayors of Auckland will accept our invitation to attend.

``We believe that the presence of His Holiness can inspire and motivate people during times of significant change and many come away profoundly moved by the experience. This event will be a unique celebration of the diversity and richness of Auckland as a city and New Zealand as a nation.’’

Translations in Mandarin, Cantonese and Vietnamese will be provided on FM frequencies at the venue.

Tibetan singer Yungchen Lhamo, accompanied on stage by Auckland tabla player Kiranjit Singh, will perform prior to His Holiness speaking.

The Trust remains confident that John Key will meet the Dalai Lama during this visit following a formal invitation to the Prime Minister recently.
