Football Fever at the Waterfront
11 November 2009
A Festival of Football is planned
this Saturday at Wellington's Queen's Wharf. It includes the
Street Football National Championship and NZ Freestyle
Champs and culminates in the New Zealand All Whites World
Cup qualifier against Bahrain at the Westpac Stadium.
At Queen’s Wharf, right under the sails,
Wellington’s Street Football team faces off against four
other regional teams vying for the crown of national
champion.
At 11:30am the teams will parade on to the
pitch and after an official opening by Sam Jackson, Kaumatua
of Te Atiawa and Wellington Tenths Trust and Mayor Kerry
Prendergast the first game will begin at 12:30pm.
The
quickfire four-aside games last just 15 minutes and will be
played on a special playing surface imported from overseas
just for the occasion.
The tournament final is
scheduled for 3:45pm followed by prizegiving and a
BBQ.
Dowtown Community Ministry is lead agency supporting
the Wellington team.
Law firm DLA Phillips Fox has generously sponsored the
Wellington team kit.
The tournament will also promote
the Road to Rio campaign for the Homeless World Cup to be held in September next
year in Brazil.
