Warriors to meet Sydney Roosters at Rotorua International Stadium on 13 February
ROTORUA 13.11.09: Rotorua rugby league fans who recently enjoyed the thrilling New Zealand vs Tonga test match at the city’s International Stadium are in for more top class rugby league in the new year.
New Zealand’s Vodafone Warriors announced today that they will take on the Sydney Roosters at the International Stadium on 13 February in what will be an important pre-season workout for both teams.
As an added bonus the Vodafone Warriors Toyota Cup team will come up against a regional invitation side in the curtain raiser
After a disappointing year in 2009, the Warriors are rebuilding and will take the field under the new captaincy of Simon Mannering. The team includes a star studded list of international players including Kiwis Mannering, Lance Hohaia, Kevin Locke, Ben Matulino, Sam Rapira, Jerome Ropati, Manu Vatuvei and Kangaroos Brett Tate and Steven Price.
The Roosters will be playing their first match under a new coaching team of head coach Brian Smith, assisted by his son Rohan who coached Tonga in the recent test match and was previously assistant coach at the Warriors when Daniel Anderson was in charge.
A strong contingent of Kiwi internationals is included in the Roosters squad including Sam Perrett, Frank-Paul Nuuausala, Shaun Kenny-Dowall, their major new signing Jarred Waerea-Hargreaves and Junior Kiwi Mose Masoe. Rotorua born Waerea-Hargreaves made his debut for the Kiwis in the October test on his home turf and is also likely to make his Roosters debut in the city of his birth.
Events & Venues Rotorua general manager Peter McLeod says the Warriors-Roosters match is in part acknowledgement of the strong support Rotorua rugby league followers gave the recent test match where a crowd of more than 8000 fans turned up.
“Attracting these teams to Rotorua has also been made easier by the city’s brand new direct trans-Tasman air services which have helped make the staging of such a match in Rotorua logistically viable.
The Vodaphone Warriors v Sydney Roosters match will be at Rotorua’s International Stadium on 13 February next year. Tickets go on sale on November 20 at Ticketmaster outlets, including the Rotorua Convention Centre, on the internet at www.ticketmaster.co.nz or by free phone 0800 111 999
Mr McLeod is encouraging rugby league fans to purchase their tickets to the match in advance as special pre-purchase ticket prices not only offer significant savings against gate prices but will save patrons time at the gate.
