Special Olympians to benefit from Lakefront Air Show

ROTORUA 09.12.09: Rotorua’s Special Olympics Association is set to benefit from Saturday’s Lets Go Rotorua Lakefront Air Show and carnival having been appointed by the Rotorua District council as the show’s official charity.

Collectors will be moving amongst spectators at the air show and Mayor Kevin Winters is asking those attending to be generous and to make a small offering to Special Olympics collectors, in place of an entry fee.  

Events and Venues Rotorua general manager Peter McLeod said Rotorua District Council is delighted to be bringing over three hours of free entertainment to the community, in the air and on the ground, so Rotorua residents can celebrate in style the arrival of the city’s first direct trans-Tasman flight.

“We know our community is a generous one and we’re hoping people enjoying the free air show on Saturday will reciprocate with some generous support for Rotorua’s inspirational special Olympians."  

The Special Olympics provide competitive sporting opportunities in a wide range of sports for people with disabilities. The local Rotorua committee offers regular sports activities for disabled athletes within the district as well as sending representative teams to compete at Special Olympics National Games.

The Let’s Go Rotorua! Lakefront Air Show and carnival starts at 11am on Saturday [12 December], concluding with the arrival of Air New Zealand’s inaugural A320 direct flight from Sydney at 2.35pm.
