Takapuna Photographers Help Give The Gift Of Vision

A Takapuna photography studio is holding a monthly community event to raise awareness of the problem of treatable blindness in the Pacific region.

ImageMe Photography runs the event, called a ‘Photo Frenzy’, once a month. The next ‘Photo Frenzy’ is on Sunday 17 January. It is free and the public is invited to come along and be photographed.

Donations will be accepted at the ‘Frenzy’ for The Fred Hollows Foundation NZ. The Foundation helps restore sight to blind people in the Pacific Region. ImageMe is an official partner of the charity, and Lisa says that as a photographer she recognizes how precious eyesight is.

Three years ago Lisa had Lasik eye surgery, giving her freedom from glasses, and says that the results seemed miraculous to her. However, she says that pales in comparison with the miracles carried out by The Fred Hollows Foundation NZ. Through its programmes in Fiji, Papua New Guinea and Timor-Leste, The Foundation trains, equips and assists local eye health professionals to deliver quality eye health services in their own communities. These services include surgeries that restore vision to people who have been blinded by cataracts. Lisa says she was shocked to learn that 80% of the people in the world who are blind could have their vision restored to them if poverty did not prevent them receiving the services they require.

The ‘Photo Frenzy’, which will run from 10am to 1pm, is timed to coincide with the Takapuna Market so that visitors to the market can pop over to the studio to take part.

Each ‘Frenzy’ has a theme and this month’s theme is ‘Quirky Characters’. Due to the distortion created by perspective and the lens, the people photographed seem to have huge heads and tiny bodies.

Upcoming themes include ‘Hollywood Villains’ and ‘Silhouettes’. The images will be displayed online.

Photographer Lisa Crandall says it is a great chance for locals to be part of a communal project, have fun, and support a great cause.

ImageMe Photography is located at 84a Hurstmere Road, upstairs above Apples Clothing and Café d’Amour.
