Oxfam NZ: Haiti Earthquake Response
Oxfam: Haiti Earthquake Response
The extent
of the devastation of Tuesday's earthquake in Haiti is now
coming into focus, and we really need your help.Thank you
to those who have already supported our response.
Here is
the latest: news and images are coming in, painting a
painful picture of the damage. The situation is worse than
we could have imagined.
More than 50,000 are feared
dead, with some estimates as high as 100,000 – with so
much devastation, it's just too soon to tell
Oxfam staff
on the ground have reported tragic scenes of bodies all over
the city and piled-up at hospital entrances. Many thousands
of people have lost their homes and will sleep out in the
open again tonight.
Our team is there, providing clean
water and emergency shelter to as many as possible of the
300,000 people now living homeless in this severely damaged
city. But with the expanding scope of this emergency, Oxfam
MUST rush more supplies and staff to
Port-au-Prince.
Having worked in Haiti for over 30 years,
Oxfam's team knows only too well the extreme poverty this
country was already struggling to overcome. The people of
Haiti do not have the resources or government infrastructure
to respond to this crisis, so outside help is
critical
The funds we raise today will determine how many
lives we can save now and how many people we can help later
to rebuild their lives.
Please, donate as generously as you can to
Oxfam's Haiti Earthquake Response Fund.
Our thoughts
are with the people of Haiti – thank you for supporting
this emergency response - and again, many thanks to those of
you who have already made a
contribution.
