Peka Peka to North Otaki expressway tender process underway

The NZ Transport Agency (NZTA) is inviting tenders for undertaking work on the Peka Peka to Otaki expressway, part of the Wellington Northern Corridor Road of National Significance.

The corridor, one of seven roads of national significance, is being developed as a four-lane expressway from Levin to Wellington Airport. The corridor will be built in sections with the overall route substantially completed within the next 10 years. The Peka Peka to Otaki section includes four-laning, intersection improvements and an Otaki Bypass.

NZTA Wellington State Highway Manager, Rob Whight, said the work being tendered includes scheme assessment and engineering services, and environmental management, planning and consultation for the 13km four-lane expressway between Peka Peka Road and Taylors Road

“This work, which will help NZTA complete the investigation, planning and preliminary design for the Peka Peka to Otaki section of the corridor, will help us to provide certainty to the local community about the proposed route as soon as possible.

“Our immediate priority is to finalise the design of the route so we can confirm consenting and property requirements,” he said.

The completion of a four-lane expressway between Otaki and MacKays Crossing will mean safer and quicker journeys for the people of Kapiti and for the national travelling public.

Tenders will close on 25 May 2010 for the Scheme Assessment and Engineering Services contract and 8 June for the Environmental Management, Planning and Consultation contract. NZTA will announce the successful tenderer(s) for these contracts as soon as commercial negotiations have been completed. It is expected that this will be by the end of June 2010. The Geotechnical Engineering and Testing contract will be put out for tender later in the year.
