Bay of Plenty staff are continuing to monitor river levels
around the region and are on standby to deal with flooding
that may occur.
Environment Bay of Plenty Rivers and Drainage Group Manager Ken Tarboton said some of the heaviest rainfall has been recorded in the Mangorewa/Kaituna River area and said it is likely that an initial warning will soon be issued for the Kaituna River with levels rising steadily throughout the day.
“We’re continuing to urge farmers to move any stock grazing near rivers to higher ground and asking people to be vigilant and cautious, particularly around low-lying areas and waterways.”
“Our staff are continuously monitoring river levels around the region and our operations team is organised to deal with flooding issues,” Mr Tarboton said.
Since 9am this morning, Tauranga and the Western Bay of Plenty have received approximately 100mm of rain; Matatā in the eastern Bay of Plenty has recorded 126mm of rain; and Rotorua has received approximately 70-110mm of rain.
Further heavy rain is forecast for the region but is expected to ease tomorrow.
