Colourful Tasmanian mayor takes in Rotorua
ROTORUA 04.06.10: Rotorua District Council (RDC) was paid a visit yesterday by Glamorgan-Springs Bay Council’s mayor Bertrand Cadart during his week-long New Zealand holiday.
The colourful leader of a group of small towns on the east coast of Tasmania, Australia, exchanged views on local government with Mayor Kevin Winters, Cr Karen Hunt, and RDC chief executive Peter Guerin, and kept them entertained with anecdotes about his community.
Mayor Kevin Winters said Mr Cadart was quite a character and really keen on hearing about Rotorua’s tourism industry.
“He’s interested in applying what we do here back home in Tasmania.”
Mr Winters said prior to arriving in the country, Mayor Cadart had been warned about the sulphur fumes in the Rotorua air, and admitted that he expected to be hit by the smell.
“But he says he’s only caught an occasional whiff but no doubt he’ll experience a healthier dose when he heads to Hell’s Gate today to ‘sink into mud up to his neck’.”
Today Mayor Cadart is meeting with Destination Rotorua Tourism Marketing general manager Don Gunn and local tourism leaders.
Mr Cadart is spending two days in Rotorua.
