The overall prize, the World Press Photo of the Year, is awarded for the single photograph that represents an issue, situation or event of great journalistic importance, and does so in a way which demonstrates an outstanding level of visual perception and creativity. It has come to be regarded as the most prestigious award for photojournalism in the world. This Year a photo by the Italian photographer Pietro Masturzo was selected as the World Press Photo of the Year 2009.

After the contest, which is held in Amsterdam, the prize-winning photographs are assembled into a traveling exhibition that is visited by over a million people in 40 countries.
