Poster Campaign Highlights Non-Physical Violence

New Rodney Poster Campaign Highlights the Non Physical Forms of Violence

A new poster campaign about family violence is being launched this week in Rodney. The poster campaign is led by local family violence prevention project Te Rito Rodney, and focuses on types of family violence that are not pushing, hitting, or other physical forms of abuse.

Te Rito Rodney coordinator, Diane Woolson Neville says the posters are designed to highlight verbal and emotional abuse and show it is alright to seek support. “Verbal and emotional abuse is very common, and often those experiencing it don’t realise it is family violence because there are no broken bones or visible bruises. We also know that this kind of abuse leaves lasting damage.”

The posters identify several different forms of verbal abuse or controlling behaviour such as limiting one partner’s access to money or using children to control the other partner. The posters also contain contact details for local support agencies such as Hestia Rodney Women’s Refuge and Rodney Stopping Violence Services. Ms. Woolson Neville says, “Often women experiencing verbal and emotional abuse aren’t sure whether to seek support for this abuse. The posters say very clearly that these behaviours are abusive and that support is available both for those experiencing this abuse and those who want to change their abusive behaviour.”

The posters will be displayed throughout Rodney in a variety of settings. Posters can be made available to those wishing to display one in their workplace. Please contact Te Rito Rodney for more information on 09 426 6524
