Downtown Community Ministry’s (DCM) Bookfair volunteers have been honoured at the Wellington Airport Regional Community Awards, winning in the Arts and Culture category.
“Winning the award is fantastic for our volunteers. They work so hard in the months leading up to the Bookfair, as well as on the weekend itself. It is really great that their contribution has been recognised outside of DCM,” says Jennifer Partington, Communications and Events Coordinator for DCM.
The awards took place on Tuesday 24 August, and representatives were on hand to receive the award and a $500 cheque. The framed certificate is now hanging in DCM’s reception for all to see.
Our volunteers begin sorting books about four months before the event itself, where thousands of books are carefully sorted into their categories each Saturday morning. Our volunteers have a love for books, are dedicated - committing their time each week - and they are passionate about the work DCM does in the community.
With their help, the 2010 Bookfair was our most successful yet, raising over $120,000 on the weekend itself – about $5,000 more than last year.
To top off a successful evening, Street Football Aotearoa volunteers were also acknowledged, winning the Sports and Leisure category.
