Treasure Rotorua encourages safe homes during national safety week
Treasure Rotorua is encouraging locals to find out how they can make their home a safer place during Safety New Zealand Week [30 August – 5 September].
More New Zealanders are injured in the home than anywhere else, and every 56 seconds someone in New Zealand has an injury at home.
Rotorua District Council community safety projects officer Amy Royston says this year over 500 New Zealanders will die because of an accident in the home, which is more than the number of people killed on our roads.
“In Rotorua, around 1000 people are hospitalised every year because of injury – with a third of those injuries occurring at home. However accidents at home are easy to prevent.”
She says during the national safety week Treasure Rotorua is promoting simple things residents can do to reduce the risk of being injured in their own homes.
“Simple tips for staying safe at home include fixing down mats and carpets, using a rubber non-slip mat in the bath or shower, taking care when using a ladder, making glass doors and windows visible, paying attention while cooking, locking away poisons and medicines, working smoke alarms, and keeping electrical cords out of the way.”
A home safety exhibit will be on display in the Rotorua District Library’s children section during Safety NZ Week.
Children can take part in colouring and spot-the-difference competitions. Winners will receive a super home safety pack for their family. Parents can also take away information about how to make their homes safer.
