Protocol makes it easy to say ‘Yes’ to filming in Auckland

Auckland City Council has released a new protocol for the screen production industry. This code of conduct makes filming in Auckland even easier and more attractive to international and local producers. Auckland City Council developed this protocol in close consultation with Film Auckland and industry practitioners. The Council is committed to supporting the film industry and to create an international hub for screen production.

“The Auckland City Council recognises the key role that Film Auckland plays in stimulating growth for the screen production industry. Because of their dedication and diligence, we are confident this new protocol will make Auckland a first-choice competitor in the film industry,” says Cr Aaron Bhatnagar, Chairman of the City Development Committee.

The protocol is designed to be easily followed and simplifies the consent process. It will enable quicker turnaround times with all decisions made transparently.

“As part of making Auckland an internationally renowned film friendly destination, it is imperative there are rules and regulations in place. This protocol guides filmmakers through the consent process enabling them to submit a thorough and complete application from the outset,” says Roimata Macgregor, Chairperson, Film Auckland.

The screen production industry contributes $2.2 billion to Auckland’s economy and there are over 1440 production and post-production businesses.

Recent productions made in Auckland include Warner Bros’ 3D version of Yogi Bear starring Dan Aykroyd and Justin Timberlake; big action movie Ice starring Richard Roxburgh with Sam Neill and Stephen Moyer; Tracker starring Ray Winstone and Temuera Morrison; The Hopes and Dreams of Gazza Snell starring Robyn Malcolm; Disney telemovie Avalon High; popular kids show Power Rangers; and the US hit TV series Spartacus: Blood and Sand starring Lucy Lawless and John Hannah.
