Fish out of Water back for summer

ROTORUA 23.09.10: Fish Out Of Water is back for summer 2010/11.

Rotorua District Council (RDC) has launched its annual community arts project which requires “arty and crafty” people to create spectacular fish.

RDC community arts officer Kiri Jarden says up to 12 entrants will each be invited to decorate a metre-long trout so people need to get creative.

“There’s a limited number of fish available so there will need to be a ‘tender’ process for each fish – which means sending in fabulous ideas.

“The fibreglass fish are recycled from previous years, which in the past have been painted and glued with an assortment of media, including mosaics, feathers, tapa cloth, glitter, material, and all sorts.”

Ms Jarden says she is also on the look-out for retailers interested in hosting the fish once they have been subject to some artistic treatment.

“While new artists have given an indication that they’d like to decorate a fish, retailers have also come on board wanting to host fish at their premises.

“As it happens, the fish are fantastic marketing. We’ve had great feedback from locals and visitors who last year took their children on the fish trail, and then into shops and cafes where they spent some money.”

Fish Out Of Water will form a trail in the CBD during December and January.
