It’s a record breaking Show!

As well as breaking an attendance record on the opening day, this year’s Canterbury A&P Show has broken the Guinness World Record for the greatest number of people leapfrogging at a single venue.

With the help of students from around Christchurch, the record was broken with 1325 participants at the Canterbury A&P Show; breaking the existing record by a mere 25 participants. The record was held by Singapore with 1300 people jumping simultaneously.

“The distribution of registration information to schools coincided with the recent Christchurch earthquake and subsequent aftershocks. Despite our initial confidence at easily breaking the record we saw numbers decline with each aftershock. To break the record, even marginally, was a great success for Christchurch and the Show” commended Event Producer David Huxley.

A former International athlete, David has successfully broken 7 Guinness World Records, on each attempt doubling the previous record. David is best known for pulling a Qantas Boeing 747 weighing 187 tonnes, 91 metres in 1 minute 27 seconds.

The attempt was held today under the watchful eye of Show visitors, Guinness World Record Representative Chris Sheedy and Jane Symmans of Macmillan Publishers (publishers of the Guinness World Record book). Chris will be familiar to Kiwi audiences having been the Guinness Representative on the TVNZ show NZ Smashes Guinness World Records.

“Once again the Kiwi’s have challenged the world and won. Congratulations to the Canterbury A&P Show and the 1325 leapfrogging Kiwi kids on a brilliant Guinness World Record” commented Sheedy.

Canterbury A&P Show attendance on Wednesday 10 November was 18,000. Wednesday attendance typically averages between 8,000 to 15,000.

The Canterbury A&P Show runs until Friday 12 November at Canterbury Agricultural Park Christchurch. Attracting on average 110,000 people, close to 7000 livestock and feature competition entries and 600 trade exhibitors, plus three full days of entertainment, it is the largest Agricultural and Pastoral Show in the country.
