Safety improvements set to begin on Queen Street

Work is about to get underway to improve safety on State Highway 1, Queen Street, in Cambridge for all road users says the NZ Transport Agency (NZTA).

Kaye Clark, the NZTA’s State Highway Manager says the $100 000 project involves building a 110 metre extension to the central raised median island and closing both right turns into Lake Street.

“This work is the second phase of a two-phase project to improve safety for all road users on Queen Street. Both Lake Street intersections will be closed to all right turning vehicle movements but they will remain open for left turns in and out. This will relieve congestion on Queen Street by reducing the queues and delays caused by right turning traffic at these intersections. A pedestrian refuge will be built into the raised median, encouraging walkers to cross the road at a safe point.”

The first phase of the project involved building the raised median barrier at the west end of Queen Street near the roundabout and was completed late last year.

Construction will begin next week and is expected to take two to three weeks, depending on weather conditions. NZTA thanks road users for their patience and cooperation during the works.
