DWC committed to supporting West Coast communities
Development West Coast today announced it will donate $1 million to help families of the Pike River miners, reaffirming its commitment to the people of the West Coast.
Robert Buchanan, acting chairman of DWC, said DWC was deeply saddened by the tragedy and offered its full support to the families of the miners.
“The Trustees recognise the need to help those affected by the disaster – both immediately and, most likely, for many years to come. We will work with other agencies on the Coast to help co-ordinate the support structures so that they meet the real needs of those affected.”
“The ramifications of this tragedy will be widely and deeply felt over a long period of time. DWC’s core business is to promote sustainable employment opportunities and sustainable industries, and the Trustees also stand ready to assist with that,” said Mr Buchanan.
“DWC has offered to work with the Government in the coming days and weeks to identify other means of support, and assist in the delivery of that support,” he said.
Chief Executive, Dr John Chang, said “DWC was positioned to work closely with the local authorities and industries on the West Coast, with the support of the Government, with the aim of developing longer-term recovery of the mining industry on the West Coast and the wider economy.
DWC is committed to the well-being of the West Coast communities and stands in solidarity with the mining community at this time.
