Summer In Nelson

Summer In Nelson

It’s time to get out the lanterns, brush up the teddies, air the picnic blankets for outdoor movies and rustle up the ready coinage for buskers… the City Council’s Summer in Nelson booklets will be delivered to city and Richmond houses this week (Dec 2).

Festival producer Sophie Kelly says all the usual events are there, starting with the Canterbury Community Trust Lantern Celebration on Saturday December 18.

“A part of this event that’s growing every year is the Nelson Mail Lantern Workshop at the Suter where you come along with the family from 5.30pm to make your lantern before heading off for the walk up the Centre of New Zealand,” she said.
The New Year will be brought in with a positive vibe at the Church Steps, with roots reggae band House of Shem, supported by funked up Hip-Hop Master Pilot Sound System plus a DJ and three MCs scratching and rapping over original beats.

January sees the Teddy Bears going down to the woods at Isel Park for their annual picnic, Street Beat entertains shoppers in the city and Solar City Summer Movies appear in parks from Tapawera to Victory.

“Solar City is a great match as a new sponsor for some good old classics like Lassie Come Home and High Noon,” Sophie said. “They’re really keen to be involved and are supplying solar powered lights to help people leave the venues safely when the movie is over.”

In early February Buskerburgoo will draw an amazing mix of street acts from around the world, with street performance, a family show at the Church Steps and the popular cabaret show When Buskers Go Bad back at the Boathouse.”
The programme finale is Nelson Opera in the Park at Trafalgar Park on February 26 with Ben Makisi, Aivale Cole, the Vector Wellington Orchestra and the Topp Twins.

Summer in Nelson is produced by the Nelson City Council as a celebration for locals and an added attraction for visitors. Summer in Nelson booklets are now available at libraries, visitor centres and council offices throughout the region or you can check it out at www.nelsonfestivals.co.nz
