Something special at the Cathedral

Something special at the Cathedral

A camel called Mildred features in a fresh look at the nativity story being staged at Nelson Cathedral next Sunday (Dec 12).

Associate Priest Rev Yvonne McLean says local theatre family the Carruthers are Cathedral parishioners, and Richard Carruthers has written his own version of the Christmas story with Nelson Youth Theatre taking part in the production.

Richard Carruthers says the play has elements of panto and a cast of over twenty.

³We¹re starting from moment the Virgin Mary conceives so that is a little bit different,² he says. ³Musically we have some songs from Godspell, which Nelson Youth Theatre produced recently, as well as some contemporary songs and there¹s an opportunity for all the children in the congregation to join in when the Wise Men are giving baby Jesus his gifts.²

Rev McLean said everyone is welcome to come along to the Christmas Nativity Story at the Cathedral on Sunday.

³It has been a tough year with the earthquake and the mining disaster and the Christmas story brings a message of hope,² she said. ³It tells us Christ is by our side, walking with us no matter what we face.²

The Christmas Nativity Story is at the 10am service at the Cathedral on Sunday December 12.
