Major milestone at grass roots of Stadium project
Forsyth Barr Stadium’s turf has today been mowed for the first time, marking another major milestone in the construction programme.
The grass, which was planted three weeks ago under the unique ETFE roof, has performed exceptionally well in the Stadium environment and the results have been pleasing, yet not unexpected, to the turf experts.
Growing the natural grass under the fixed roof is a world first and demonstrates the level of innovation going into the Stadium construction. Scientists and turf experts from around the world have been working over the last few years to perfect the exact conditions and sun strike levels required to grow grass under the ETFE roof. The Stadium site and pitch composition has been designed specifically for the conditions particular to the unique environment.
Malcolm Farry, Chairman of the Carisbrook Stadium Charitable Trust, commented `The natural grass is a unique and modern feature of the Stadium that will set us apart from other venues all over the world. Dunedin is well regarded as a city of firsts and this is another great first for the city – we should all be really proud.
“The first mow today is an historical moment for the Stadium and will become part of the story of our new hallowed turf.”
