Fine Wine Auction For Earthquake Appeal

We taste, rate and stand behind every wine we sell.

Fine Wine Auction For Earthquake Appeal

Hi from The Poole Family & The Fine Wine Delivery Company Team

The Christchurch Earthquake has marked a very dark day in NZ history. To see our fellow kiwis suffering, injured, losing loved ones, their homes and businesses destroyed is heartbreaking to say the least.

We've deferred our normal promotional activity for a 48 hour period as this is a time for all New Zealanders to get on and do what we can to help our deeply devastated Christchurch community.

Christchurch needs our help and here's one way our family, our team and our customers can all contribute...

We are putting up for auction three cases of our rare Selection Series dozens valued at $4000 each (with the help of our customers we hope to successfully auction all three cases and gift all proceeds to the cause). Even if you are unable to bid for one of the dozens, you can greatly assist by forwarding this auction offer as broadly as possible in a hope to maximise the funds raised.

The auction:

The Fine Wine Delivery Company Selection Series Dozen valued at $4000

A selection of 12 rare wines collected by and aged in the professional wine cellar storage facilities of The Fine Wine Delivery Company.

Endorsed as a magnificent selection of wines by Masters of Wine, Steve Smith, Jane Skilton and Alastair Maling, all of the wines are in pristine condition and drinking superbly.

100% of proceeds go to the Red Cross Appeal

Below are our full reviews of this rare selection of professionally cellar aged wines, tasted by our expert team in the last month:

Fine Wine Selection Series Dozen

Seppelt Show Reserve Sparkling Shiraz 1994
Spectacular opulence and refinement and a divine pleasure of lush dark fruits, chocolate, spice, juicy creamy finish. 80-year old vine fruit, 18-months maturation post fermentation in large old wooden cuvees before being introduced to Methode Champenoise and retained on lees in bottle for 7.5 years (longer than prestige French Champagne such as Krug, Dom, Crystal etc.). Released as a 10-year old wine it is sealed with a crown top and is likely to last 50+ years if professionally stored.

Mesh Riesling 2003
The concentrated palate is laden with lime and lemon characters with hints of ginger and clover honey adding further complexity. A backbone of lime zest acidity leaves your mouth refreshed and wanting more of this fantastic Riesling. Showing lovely honeyed tastes with age but clearly good to continue cellaring through 2015+ if professionally stored.

Millton Chenin Blanc 2002
Pure fruit concentration with a fine structure, lovely citrus, apple, white blossom and mineral tones, developing fullness and deep honeyed and tropical tastes with age but likely to age through to 2015 with ease. One can taste the generosity achieved with low fruit yields; a different and quite exciting NZ white wine.

Mountford Chardonnay 2002
Complex, enticing aromas of queen peach, shortbread, bush honey, sweet toffee, and hints of papaya encased within brawny, flinty, vanillin oak. Now showing complex savoury and nutty aged characters a la quality White Burgundy, at its peak but in good condition and would be easily mistaken for aged Chablis in a blind tasting according to Steve Smith MW when he tasted it 2-years ago.

Unison Selection 2000
The aromas are complex with dark fruits, spicy oak, underlying floral nuances. The palate is impressive with superbly concentrated fruit with wonderful tannin structure; showing developing savoury aged characters but still some signs of primary fruit. Low fruits yields, gentle pressing and extraction and use of quality oak are evident in this fine Hawkes bay Bordeaux style blend.

Amisfield Rocky Knoll Riesling 2005
Lemon sherbet and lime, spice aromas will not prepare you for the delightful array of intense flavours - lemonade, honey, apricot, orange and a flicker of minerality enhancing the feel and complexity of this wine. Its razor fine acids and mineral spine ensure its sweet fruits have a very precise and cleansing finish.

Sacred Hill Helmsman Cabernet Sauvignon 1998
Medium to full bodied with a fine structure that supports black and red fruit flavours with typical notes of olive, chilli and herbs that add complexity. Quite a Bordeaux style with hints of pate and savoury notes emerging it’s likely at its peak although will drink well for a few years yet if professionally stored.

Joseph Moda Amarone Cabernet Merlot 1999
The palate is ripe, slightly sweet, full-bodied and concentrated. Long on flavours of coffee, leather, perfectly ripe fruit; very impressive wine. Produced Moda Amarone (fruit is dried for several weeks prior to crushing a la Italian Amarone) it is a generous and ripe red that is drinking beautifully now but still may show further improvement and should make it through 2015+ if professionally stored.

Bilancia La Collina Syrah 2002
The wine is dense with ripe, spice and berry fruit flavours. Like the wines of the northern Rhone it is more about texture and complexity than intense fruit flavours; very sophisticated Syrah made with 1tonne per acre yields off a precipitous 2 acre vineyard planted on the side of Roy’s Hill on the edge of the Gimblett Gravels. It still has some primary tastes but has defined savoury influence emerging a la Cote Rotie (includes a tiny 2% splash of Viognier).

Craggy Range The Quarry Cabernet Merlot 2004
Beautifully ripe, dense Cabernet Merlot with an array of cassis, thyme, cigar box, soy spice, bramble and dried leaf aromas a la fine Bordeaux. 2004 signalled the evolution of Craggy Range to producing more refined Cabernet with finely balanced acid/tannin. It is aging beautifully and will comfortably evolve further through to 2020 if professionally stored.

Tower Shiraz 2001
The aromatic potpourri of ripe black cherries/berries/plums is accentuated with hints of black pepper, smoky bacon and violets. On the palate lush, chocolate biscuit textured tannins are wrapped around juicy blackberries. A great Barossa vintage with more elegance and this old vine style is made in a more subdued but never the less generously flavoured style matured in French oak. Drinking very nicely and revealing more savoury spicy tastes it’s good to enjoy through 2015.

Clonakilla Hilltops Shiraz 2004
Smoky, fragrant aromas woven with earthy dark fruit notes suggest you’re about to indulge in a wine more interesting than most. An amalgam of black fruits, mixed spices, dark savoury characters cross your palate in silky textures embraced by cocoa/liquorice infused tannins. Clonakilla is the work of owner Tim Kirk and his cool climate Shiraz can be likened to Rhone Syrah against which he has successfully competed at the highest level in international reviews. Drinking well this Shiraz still has 5-years of improvement.
