Red Cross pays out nearly $3 million in grants

New Zealand Red Cross will have paid out nearly $3 million by this weekend on Emergency and Hardship grants to over 2800 applicants. Grants were announced last week by the New Zealand Red Cross 2011 Earthquake Commission to assist people and communities affected by the February earthquake.

The total number of applicants stands at around 16,000 with that amount expected to rise with more people completing applications and additional grants, to be announced.

The Commission was set-up to oversee the distribution of the 2011 Earthquake Appeal funds so that donated money can quickly and appropriately get to the people that need it.

Commission Chair Sir John Hansen said today further grants would be discussed at the next Commission meeting in Christchurch on Monday. He also welcomed New Zealand Red Cross Vice President and former Chief Executive of New Zealand King Salmon, Paul Steere to the Commission.

“Paul Steere has extensive business experience, and as he comes from New Zealand Red Cross he understands the nature of this appeal and our goal to help those affected by the February earthquake - he is an asset to our Commission.”

More than $25.4 million has been donated by generous Kiwis, businesses and from overseas, to the 2011 Earthquake Appeal, but more is still needed to assist those affected by the Christchurch earthquake.

Earlier this week the Commission went to Christchurch’s eastern suburbs to talk to residents and assess their needs in order to better understand the current needs of some of Christchurch’s most damaged communities.

New Zealand Red Cross National President Penny Mason and Chief Executive John Ware joined the Commission on its visit and said so much more was needed as the recovery has just begun.

“The day in Christchurch made me feel very humble and I was very proud to see Red Cross staff and so many volunteers working hard, willingly and efficiently to help,” said Mrs Mason.

“New Zealand Red Cross wants to thank the generous companies, individuals and groups that have gone to extraordinary lengths to support those affected by the Christchurch earthquake.

“It’s sad to say but so much more help is needed.”
People can donate to the appeal via www.redcross.org.nz , by texting a message of support to 4419 to donate $3 or making a credit card donation of any amount by calling 0800 272 006.
