4WD through the forest, tramp on an historical track
Guided tours into little-known areas of our region are on offer this weekend as part of Greater Wellington's Great Outdoors summer events 2011 programme. "We're almost at the end of this year's programme - so now's the time to discover new places in our regional parks and forests network," says Cr Nigel Wilson, Chair of Greater Wellington's Social and Cultural Wellbeing Committee.

Norbett's Creek Walk
Kaitoke Regional Park
Saturday 2 April, 10am-1pm

Join Greater Wellington rangers on a trip up Norbett's Creek tramping track and through bush onto the access road in the Hutt Water Collection area. "The Norbett's Creek track is very old and has only been marked for the last few years - before that it was only known to tramping clubs. It's pretty special - you get to head up through nice beech forest and on a good day you'll get views of the Kaitoke Basin, Wellington Harbour and the inland Kaikoura ranges," says Greater Wellington's Kaitoke Regional Park Ranger Steve Edwards.

This event is free and there are spot prizes. Good fitness is required to do the walk.

4WD Back Country Akatarawa
Sunday 3 April
Two Sessions: 9am-12noon and 1.30pm-4.30pm

Bring your vehicle and join a 4WD "tag long" trip through the Akatarawa Forest, organised by Greater Wellington and led by members of the Cross Country Vehicle Club. "The Akatarawa Forest is a beautiful area but it's hard to access, so these trips are a great way to get in there and see it for yourself. Every time we help out with this event, we seem to get a couple of new members," says club member David Coxon.

The morning session departs from Totara Park, finishing at Maungakotukutuku Valley entrance. The 1.30pm session is in reverse.
Cost: $20 per vehicle
