Milestone for Steel duo
Midcourt dynamo Liana Leota will notch up her 50th game for the Ascot Park Hotel Southern Steel when it takes on the Vixens in Melbourne on Sunday.
Leota, 26, will share the impressive milestone with coach Robyn Broughton, who will have been at the helm of the team for 50 ANZ Championship games.
“It doesn’t feel like it – it’s gone so quickly. But it’s a proud moment,” Leota said.
The energetic Silver Fern has played every game in the franchise’s history.
“I think Robbie’s just a bit biased and didn’t have anyone else to play wing attack,” she quipped.
There were many highlights to reflect on.
“Being captain is a huge achievement and just being on that court all those times,” Leota said.
“It’s something special to be on that court every time … but I really hate to be on the bench. To be on the court for 60 minutes is what I train for and play for.”
The Steel’s upset victory over the Vixens in Dunedin last year was a standout – a feat Leota was aiming to repeat in Sunday’s clash.
“I really enjoyed that game.”
