Auckland's new high performance centre set to benefit elite athletes and community health
New Zealand is one step closer to having world-class facilities dedicated to cultivating high performance athletes with a $40M development now underway on Auckland’s North Shore.
As some of the foundations are laid, this Friday, Minister for Sport and Recreation Murray McCully will unveil some of the $40M expansion plans at AUT Millennium campus – New Zealand’s news home of high performance sport.
Mike Stanley, CEO of the AUT Millennium Trust and President of the New Zealand Olympic Committee says the developments are set to benefit not only high performance athletes and coaches, but also community health and education.
“Government is investing over $15M into stage one redevelopments of AUT Millennium campus. The expansion will double the current floor space, creating a world class facility that will be on par with other sporting centre’s of excellence around the world, such as the Australian Institute of Sport,” says Stanley.
Developments include a 50m Olympic swimming pool, the creation of a high performance zone, a new public health and fitness centre, a human potential centre which specialises in developing nutrition and physical activity, a coaching performance centre, a sports science centre incorporating an environmental chamber and a strength and conditioning suite; expanded medical and specialist facilities, significant additional office, education and meeting facilities; and additional accommodation.
The new high performance centre will be jointly run by AUT Millennium Trust – a 50-50 partnership between AUT University and the Millennium Institute of Sport and Health.
