Subway® Pro Cycling’s Sam Horgan Wins Impressive Double at Weekend
12 April 2011
Sam Horgan from the SUBWAY® Pro Cycling Team won both the Canterbury time trial and road race titles in impressive fashion at the weekend.
Horgan won the senior 40 kilometre time trial on Saturday in 51 minutes and 24 seconds with an average speed of 46.68 kilometres an hour. He was two and a half minutes ahead of second placed James Early (Benchmark Homes Team). Kyle Raft from the Tasman Wheelers Club was third.
He then backed up to win Sunday’s 130 kilometre road race after being part of an early break that was caught by several chasers and then whittled down to only Horgan, time trial runner up Early and his Benchmark Homes team mate Leon Hextall, by the final fifth lap of the Glentunnel circuit.
“We were still working well on the last lap and our lead was over six minutes back to a hugely diminished field,” Horgan said.
“Luckily the pace had taken its toll and despite their best attempts James and Leon were unable to place me under too much pressure heading to the finish and I won the final sprint quite comfortably.”
“It was just what I needed before heading to the Tour of Korea this week. I was keen for a weekend of good hard racing and that’s what I got.”
