Selwyn District leads New Zealand in economic performance

Selwyn District leads New Zealand in economic performance

The Selwyn District economy is the best performing in New Zealand according to the 2010 BERL Regional Performance Report.

BERL (Business and Economic Research Ltd) is a leading economics consultancy based in Wellington that publishes an annual report ranking New Zealand’s 72 Territorial Local Authority’s (TLA) by nine key performance indicators. The latest report considers each authority for the year ending March 2010 against short-term and medium-term performance in population growth, employment growth, Gross Domestic Product growth and the number of new businesses in each district.

According to the report, “For 2010, the Selwyn District Council was New Zealand’s best performing district. The District has always been a high performer, remaining in the top five districts since 2008. The District had the fastest growing population in 2010, and in the medium term, the second best performance in three key indicators of population, employment and GDP growth.”

“The result in the latest BERL report reflects the hard work that has been done by the local business community and the Council over a number of years to grow Selwyn into a thriving economic centre,” says Selwyn Mayor, Kelvin Coe.

“Selwyn is a district full of exciting opportunities for our residents and for people looking to move to the district. This report highlights the economic opportunities – employment and business growth – and these are supported by a fantastic lifestyle and strong community.”

Mayor Coe recognises that the report covers a period that does not include the Canterbury earthquakes and that these have caused significant disruption to the local economy.

“It is uncertain what our economic performance will look like for 2011 and for the next few years as we focus on recovering from the earthquakes. But we can take heart from the fact that the BERL report demonstrates Selwyn’s strong position leading into this difficult time. We are well placed to weather the economic impact of the earthquakes.”
