Iconic “pie cart” ready to get Hooked on Seafood

Thursday 5TH May 2011

Wellington Railway Station’s iconic “pie cart” ready to get Hooked on Seafood

The old Wellington Railway Station “pie cart” is set to get Wellingtonians Hooked on Seafood, thanks to Moana Pacific Fisheries. The new food outlet, opening on 31st May, will give commuters, local workers and visitors to the city, a new option for fresh, quality takeaway, or fresh seafood options to take home and cook themselves.

Steve Tarrant general manger of Moana Pacific Fisheries says “Fish is a great source of vitamins and minerals that everybody needs, yet research shows that whilst nearly half the NZ population considers eating it, they are afraid to buy it.”

“We want to give commuters and local workers healthy meal choice options featuring the best wild, locally-caught seafood by making it more accessible to them. Whether they want a meal cooked to order or fresh seafood to pick up on their way home to cook for dinner, we’ll offer them the choice. And we’ll be offering visitors the chance to sample a true slice of Kiwiana with a traditional seafood platter.

“One thing’s for sure, we are not your everyday fish and chip takeaway. We proudly supply fresh, quality product for all our takeaway meals, and our fresh take home seafood will always meet our strict retail criteria. If we fall short on any of these promises, we’ll give customers their money back.”

Takeaway menu highlights include Thai fish cakes, Mussel fritters and a Kiwiana special to give visitors a sample of traditional Kiwi seafood, such as Bluff Oysters, scallops, salmon, and a fillet of the day. Meal deals will start at $10 and there will also be individual food options and children’s meals available.

Fresh seafood options will be based on seasonal catches but will include plenty of regular favourites such as Tarakihi, Snapper, Blue Cod and Groper. Prices will be based on weight and will match those in Moana Pacific’s other stores. Customers will also be able to buy Moana’s new convenient “Garnish to Go” packs, where you pick your fillet and choose a garnish, have it sealed in a special bag that’s ready for you to take home and cook, with no mess and no dishes.

As well as a fresh new menu, the cart is getting a clean new look, designed specifically with an oceanic theme in mind. Mr Tarrant added: “People judge a seafood retailer by the look of their premises, therefore we’ve designed the new cart with the latest materials and cleaning techniques in mind to ensure a consistently spotless presentation that matches the quality of our fish.”

Hooked on Seafood will initially be open from 10am till 7.30pm on weekdays. Starting 10th September, it will also open on Saturdays and during Westpac Stadium events from 12pm to 7.30pm.

Moana Pacific Fisheries is a division of Aotearoa Fisheries Limited. It has retail outlets in three Moore Wilson’s stores: Tory Street in Wellington City, Kenepuru Drive in Porirua, and Masterton. In addition, the Moana Pacific truck offers the latest catch at the Cossie Club, Upper Hutt, on Mondays and Saturday mornings, Mitre 10 Mega Petone on Tuesdays and Saturday afternoons and situated on SH1 at Paekakiariki Wednesday to Friday and Sunday.
