Christchurch Earthquake Appeal trust allocates $3.5m to restore city’s playing fields

The Christchurch Earthquake Appeal has now reached over $73 million and has made its first allocation of funds, providing $3.5 million to help restore the city’s playing fields, in particular in time for winter sport for school aged kids.

Mark Weldon, the Prime Minister’s representative on the Christchurch Earthquake Appeal, said: “It’s really important that these sorts of things are fixed as soon as possible.”

“This is about the basics of a good daily Kiwi life. Sports, and places to play are a big part of that. The Appeal is focussing on Christchurch communities.”

“This allocation will also provide jobs for Christchurch contractors who will be carrying out the work.”

Allocation decisions are being made by the Trust, with the guidance of an Advisory Board made up of experts, to ensure funds are delivered where they are most needed.

The appeal has now raised $73.7 million including pledges and fundraising continues. The global telethon event Rise Up Christchurch will screen live this Sunday 22 May (www.riseup.org.nz), while in London that day, supporters are climbing 38 floors up the iconic gherkin building to raise money for the Appeal (http://stepup4christchurch.com) – the top fundraiser has already raised GBP33,474 for the cause.

“We haven’t stopped fundraising. Christchurch still needs our support and ongoing commitment.” Mr Weldon said.
