Thousands Superhaka And Show Their Support for Christchurch
Today (19 May 2011) at 12.30pm approximately 3,600 Kiwis from all over the country came together and stood strong in the nation’s simultaneous Super Haka - sending a super-sized message of love and support to Christchurch.
Super Shuttle, in collaboration with the South Island Iwi, Ngāi Tahu, took the crowds in each of the four major centres – Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin – through a haka rehearsal en masse before city Mayors counted down to the final synchronized, two min performance, at 12.30pm sharp.
The Super Haka is still rolling across the globe as Kiwis (from as far away as Ireland, Canada, the US and Mexico) are standing by, to record their own haka performances at 12.30pm (their local time) to be viewed by the people of Christchurch on www.superhaka.com.
“Kiwis from all walks of life came together today to make a call to Christchurch to “Rise Up” and “Be Strong” and the people of Christchurch, including Mayor Bob Parker, gave a resolute reply. To see each of our major cities rally together and remind our Cantabrian family that they are not alone, as they start to rebuild their city, was incredibly moving and heartwarming. We think the people of NZ are truly super!” says Graeme Dobson, co-owner of Super Shuttle.
Prime Minister John Key, Labour leader Phil Goff and former Prime Minister Helen Clark also supported this unifying event, by sending messages of support for the Super Haka. Whilst famous faces such as Rachel Hunter and ex-All Black Adam Parker sent messages via the superhaka.com website.
Funds raised from the four Super Haka events and
the rolling international haka events (via website
donations) are therefore still being tallied. But an interim
cheque will be presented to Christchurch Mayor, Bob Parker,
at the ‘Rise Up’ Telethon on the 22nd May.
