Auckland's Latest Independent Newspaper Launched
This week the first edition of the Glen Eden Guardian will hit the streets of west Auckland. Taking its design inspiration from European newspapers this is a local rag with a difference.
Designer and co-owner Melanie Tuscia says "our aim is for it to be a newspaper, not a newsletter. We want it to make a real difference and become a voice for our community".
Printer and co-owner Brom Breetveld has been producing Newstalk Blockhouse Bay for the last 8 years and he also prints the Avondale Spider, so he knows how popular local papers can be.
The pair have recruited well known local communicator Dr Mels Barton to be the Editor. Mels has been advocating for protection of the Waitakere Ranges for over 10 years and recently organised the national environmental education event Seaweek. She has embraced the challenge of writing her first newspaper articles with gusto.
"I've been amazed how excited everyone in Glen Eden is about the Guardian and I want to inspire local people to write articles and tell us their stories about their place. This is Glen Eden's newspaper and a great opportunity to shine a spotlight on somewhere that's full of interesting, hard-working people.
The Glen Eden Guardian will be delivered free to 5500 homes in Glen Eden and available in the local shops, cafes and libraries later this week.
