Chamber Supports Second Mt Victoria
Tunnel
The Wellington Employers’
Chamber of Commerce welcomes the proposed transport
developments between Buckle Street and Cobham Drive
including the second Mt Victoria tunnel.
“We will look closely at the proposals and make submissions however our initial reaction is very positive”.
“Public and private transport, relies on efficient and effective infrastructure in and around Wellington to support our economy and grow jobs. This stretch of road is an important and overdue improvement.
“The route from Buckle Street to Cobham Drive is already very congested and it is likely to get worse with the growth of the eastern suburbs, on-going airport development, new facilities such as the indoor community sports centre as well as general population growth.
“The second tunnel is something we have been pushing for a long time. We are pleased the government has seen the merits of this.
“It is disappointing a tunnel option under the Basin has been shown not to be feasible but we are pleased with the effort to minimise the visual impact of the bridge.
“In order to provide certainty for everybody, decisions need to be made and construction commenced as soon as practical. We would like to see the time table brought forward if possible,” Mr Harris concluded.
