More snow continues to fall at Treble Cone

LAKE WANAKA, New Zealand (July 9, 2011) – This week’s much awaited snowfall is continuing at Treble Cone where at least 65cm of new snow has fallen over the last 48 hours. The mountain will get underway this Sunday 10 July with a progressive opening starting with the platter lift and beginners area.

The significant amount of snow over this week has rapidly improved the situation and management hope to be operating fully within days.

However, whilst working towards opening the home basin, mountain patrol noted that due to the snow falling directly onto wet tussock, the avalanche risk is too high to open further terrain until avalanche control can be carried out. As previously announced, tomorrow’s scenic chair lift offer is no longer available due to weather conditions.

“We’re delighted to have this amount of snow and are looking to take advantage of the next weather clearance to carry out the necessary work in order to open the home basin proceeding onto the saddle basin area. Mountain staff are working around the clock to ensure we can open further terrain as soon as possible,” said Nigel Kerr, Treble Cone’s marketing manager.

Tomorrow’s opening will see food and beverage, rental and snow sports schools operating as normal. The learners lift is free of charge, giving beginners and families the opportunity to experience and enjoy a day out at Treble Cone.

The snowfall comes as a huge relief after lack of snow and an unusually warm start to winter prevented the region’s ski fields from opening as scheduled.
