Colourful
critters take over Selwyn libraries
Dragonflies, butterflies and dinosaurs turned up
together at Selwyn District libraries last week when local
children participated in the Kidsfest craft events.
More than 80 local children took up the challenge to create colourful artworks in the shape of the critters. Outreach Librarian Jackie Claridge had prepared 100 plaster casts for children to decorate and was amazed by the originality of the decorations.
“We had all sorts, green butterflies, pink dinosaurs with glitter – they really went to town,” Ms Claridge says.
This was the fourth year the Selwyn libraries had offered activities for the Kidsfest school holiday programme. Libraries Manager Glen Walker said the five Selwyn libraries generally endeavoured to offer activities in school holidays. They also provide summer and winter reading programmes for young people.
“But we really make an effort to join in with Kidsfest and the many children’s activities taking place across Canterbury. We’re particularly happy to see Kidsfest continue in the wake of the earthquakes. We’re doing everything we can to provide the normal day to day information and entertainment needs while people cope with these huge challenges in other areas,” he says.
