Kiwi champion makes solid start in US

Champion New Zealand reinsman Dexter Dunn has made a solid start to his World Driving Championship campaign in the United States, the Kiwi ace sitting in third place after the first four heats of the glamour event.

Christchurch’s Dunn finished third, eighth, second and fifth in last night’s four heats at Harrah’s Chester in Philadelphia to sit in third on the points table behind Canada’s Jody Jamieson and Spain’s Juan Antonio Rosello.

The World Driving Championship pits 10 of the world’s best harness drivers in a 20-heat series raced at five American tracks, with drives randomly balloted.

Trackside’s Jess Davidson is following Dunn’s campaign from the United States and said the 20-year-old star of New Zealand harness racing had an eventful opening night in Philadelphia.

Inquiries helped Dunn gain valuable places in two heats and with a 30-point haul he is 10 points off leader Jamieson as the series heads to Tioga Downs in New York tomorrow.

The TAB has Dunn at $5.50 to win the 25th edition of the championship, with Jamieson the favourite at $4.50.

Davidson’s regular reports from the US can be found at www.tab.co.nz, with WDC highlights and interviews broadcast on Trackside.
