LAKE WANAKA, New Zealand (October 3, 2011) The curtain fell on Treble Cone in style yesterday in celebration of a successful 2011 season.

Skiers and snowboarders displayed an array of weird and wonderful fancy dress outfits while enjoying a picture perfect blue bird day at Treble Cone with the Home and Saddle Basins offering great snow for the final turns of the season. The legendary Slush Cup pulled in a huge crowd who watched daring riders ski and snowboard board across an icy pool at the foot of the platter lift.

Strong support from the local community and a high level of service saw an increase in new and repeat visitors at Treble Cone allowing the resort to finish ahead of budget despite a shorter season. The opening day, while delayed, saw an abundance of powder setting up the mountain for great skiing and snowboarding all season. The lack of heavy snowfall over late July and August meant there were few closed days due to weather.

The smart card technology introduced for 2011 was welcomed and quickly accepted by visitors who enjoyed clocking their vertical metres over the season with some reaching 100,000 in a single week – a statistic that reinforces the amount of skiing and snowboarding available at Treble Cone.

“I think it’s safe to say that the 2011 opening day was historic with two metres of snow setting up the mountain for great skiing and riding. Treble Cone is a very large mountain when all that skiing is available. The installation of the RFID ticketing system changed how we did business and allowed us to give something back to our skiers and riders. We’re delighted with this year’s season results and we are already looking forward to 2012” said Nigel Kerr, Treble Cone marketing manager.

Many competitions were enjoyed by local and visiting snow sports enthusiasts such as the Base Triple Comp, NZ Snowboarder Banked Slalom and the Pump Mini Mountain with the children’s Riders and Sliders programme reporting record numbers for 2011.

There is one more opportunity to enjoy Treble Cone, next Saturday 8th October for the local charity fundraising day with the proceeds going to the Aspiring Avalanche Dogs and the Wanaka Rowing Club. Tickets need to be pre-purchased from Racer’s Edge on Ardmore Street. Tickets cost $40 cash and are limited to 250.
