Heavy rain expected in the next 24 hours

Bay of Plenty Regional Council warns that predicted rainfall in the region could result in localised flooding, and farmers should move stock to high ground.

Bay of Plenty Regional Council Duty Flood Manager Graeme O’Rourke said a lot of rain was expected during the next 24 hours.

“The MetService has issued a severe weather warning for areas of the North Island, including the Bay of Plenty,” Mr O’Rourke said.

“The warning predicted significant rainfall, expected to exceed 100mm, and northeasterly winds which will particularly hit the eastern Bay area.

“The worst of the weather is predicted to be with us later this afternoon and this evening, easing during the course of the night.

“We recommend that all farmers move stock to high ground and people should avoid unnecessary travel,” he said.

The MetService advises that an expected strong moist northerly flow will affect northern and central New Zealand through to Tuesday, including the Bay of Plenty.

Mr O’Rourke said the recent dry conditions and low river flows meant the rivers and drains in the region had some capacity to take heavy rainfall but urged people to take care

“It is possible that water levels will rise quickly, so people should stay away from waterways to avoid being caught out,” Mr O’Rourke said.

“There is only a minor risk of potential flooding but the situation will be monitored and updates provided if the situation changes.”
