Update 11.30: Two local commercial divers have been engaged to assist and are en-route to the crash site to search for anyone who may still be on board.

We hope to have confirmation of whether or not anyone is on board within the next couple of hours.

In the meantime, the search will continue.

Search for missing helicopter crew continues

The search for two people missing following a helicopter crash near Karikari in Northland yesterday has resumed this morning, says the Rescue Coordination Centre New Zealand (RCCNZ).

RCCNZ Search and Rescue Officer Conrad Reynecke said the crew of a fishing vessel involved in the search located the missing helicopter about 6.30am today approximately 1km off the coast.

“One of the crew from the fishing vessel was then able to dive down and confirm the helicopter was the missing craft, but he was unable to confirm whether or not anyone was still on board.”

Mr Reynecke said the craft was submerged in about 7m of water. A Police dive team from Wellington was on its way to the crash site, and was expected to arrive later today. Local police were also attempting to source local divers who may be able to assist.

“In the meantime, land-based, aerial and on-water searches are continuing in the hope of finding the helicopter crew.”

Mr Reynecke said the search would continue with helicopters, vessels and a Police LandSAR team.

“It’s too early to say what exactly may have happened, but we will be continuing to make every effort in the search for the missing crew.”
