NZTA advises drivers to take care during stormy weekend

The NZ Transport Agency is advising people to drive with care on highways and roads in Auckland and Northland this weekend because of extreme weather conditions.

A storm with heavy rain and strong winds gusting up to 100kph is forecast to sweep across the North Island overnight.

“Those wind gusts are very strong, and there is a risk to drivers from fallen trees and other debris particularly in rural areas of the region,” says the NZTA’s Regional Asset Manager, Steve Mutton. “The biggest danger is at night in those areas with limited lighting, but people should be vigilant at all times until the weather calms.”

Mr Mutton says the NZTA’s contractors will have extra crews on standby, and it will be working with emergency services and local authorities to keep highways and roads clear.

“The safety of those travelling is paramount, and we will do everything we can to ensure people reach their destination without harm,” Mr Mutton says.
