Bathurst welcomes preliminary findings on Denniston Plateau

New Zealand coal mining company Bathurst Resources says it is excited by the preliminary findings of scientists who searched the Denniston Plateau looking for new animal and plant species at the weekend, under the guidance of the Forest and Bird Protection Society.

“We were privileged to have some of our own people and scientists involved in the Forest and Bird Bioblitz on the coalfield, and we’re keen to see the detailed results of the project,” Buller Coal General Manager Marianne Rogers said.

“Forest and Bird say they found several new species and we’re keen to find out more. It’s very exciting.”

Bathurst is open to creating a reserve on the Plateau – an area that’s been mined for more than 100 years.

Bathurst’s proposed Escarpment Mine project on the Plateau will create more than 225 direct jobs in the region and inject $1 billion into the New Zealand economy over six years.
