The exciting times continue at Pukaha!

If you're into your knitting, it's time to get out the blue wool - the lovely staff at DOC have confirmed Mauriora is a boy! Mauriora is doing really well in his outdoor enclosure. The DOC rangers say he is the stroppiest chick they have ever handled! Manukura is reportedly very proud of her younger brother - check Manukura out on Facebook to find out more.

In other wonderful news, Pukaha has been named a finalist in the 'Green Gold' category at the Wellington Gold Awards.

Bob Francis, Chair of the Pukaha Mount Bruce Board, was thrilled with the result. "It's a culmination and recognition of a wonderful year for Pukaha." He went on to say that the awards recognise the hard work Pukaha Mount Bruce has put into sustainability initiatives during the past year.

Off the back of our recently awarded 'Enviro-Gold' status by Qualmark, we were well placed to demonstrate how sustainability is integral to everything we do at Pukaha - and especially in our mission to preserve our precious native forest and endangered wildlife for future generations of New Zealanders. We practice sustainability every day through our forest restoration and predator control programme, endangered species breeding programmes, advocacy and education.

As well as that there is everything from our extensive waste management and recycling programme, to our water and electricity management and conservation, requirements for local suppliers and on top of all that, our DOC staff even manage to car pool!

We're committed to continuing to build on our sustainability initiatives with a 'green team' in place to monitor progress, seek feedback and continually improve our environmental performance.

We have some tough competition in the Green Gold category including Mana Recovery, Silaca Glass Crushers and the Sustainability Trust. This year is the first time that the Wairarapa region has been eligible to enter the awards, and we were one of just three Wairarapa organisations named as finalists.

The winners will be announced at a dinner in Wellington on the 31st of May - we have our fingers crossed for another good news story in a newsletter coming to you early June! Wish us luck!
