Selwyn meets 100% dog registration target

Selwyn meets 100% dog registration target

For the fourth consecutive year the Selwyn District Council has achieved 100% re-registration of the district’s dogs.

Animal Control Administrator Tracey Wheeler says the comparatively low fees are probably one reason that people are registering their dogs, as required by law.

“It can still be a struggle for some people. The key is to pay the fee before the penalty gets added, if it is still not paid after the penalty the dog owner can expect a visit from an Animal Control Officer to discuss and encourage payment before an infringement notice is issued,” she says.

Selwyn’s registration fee is $35 for the 1st dog and $25 for any subsequent dogs, and an extra 40% is added as a late penalty.

The Dog Control Act gives Council officers power to seize any unregistered dogs.

“Thankfully it very rarely comes to that. I would welcome a call from anyone who has any registration payment difficulties, as in some cases a payment arrangement can be put in place.”

Dog owners can expect their registration packs for the year starting 1 July in the post from early July, or they can call into any Council Library/Service Centre to register their dogs if they are new to the district.
