Wildlife conservation in spotlight at AGM

Wildlife conservation in spotlight at the Brook Waimarama Sanctuary AGM

Insights from non-profit wildlife conservation in the USA will be on the agenda at the Brook Waimarama Sanctuary Trust’s AGM this week.

The Trust’s General Manager, Hudson Dodd who took on the new role in February, will be talking about his experience in North America’s Pacific Northwest where he worked on conservation of old-growth native forests and wildlife habitat for top predators.

”A lot of the conservation principals are the same, no matter what wildlife you’re working to protect,” he said. “There’s an ecosystem with native species that are endangered because of human activities, and you’re working to support the species’ recovery.”

Mr Dodd will also give a State of the Trust report on the significant progress the Trust has made this year toward its goal of constructing a pest-proof fence in the upper Brook Valley.

“We will be releasing some of the preliminary findings from our recently commissioned independent feasibility study, which give strong endorsement to the project’s viability,” Mr Dodd said.

Trust Chair, Dr David Butler, said he was quite pleased with the study’s findings: “Our business case is sound and the project stands every chance of being financially sustainable.”

The stunning photos of the Sanctuary submitted by the public in the Nelson CityCameras/Fujifilm Image Service Photo Competition will be on show, and the award winning entries will be announced.
